An email has been sent from NWIFCA  to WSA  and  other angling associations asking for help in identifying the cause of dead marine life being washed up along the shores of Wirral. A copy of the email can be seen below along with a link to an (anonymous)  questionnaire should you wish to provide your answers.

In recent years, there have been increasing reports of dead marine life – particularly Smooth-hounds – washing up along the Wirral coast. These events have raised public concern about potential links to local fishing activity and so the North West Inshore Fisheries Conservation Authority (NWIFCA) is currently looking into the wash-up of Smooth hounds (both Starry and Common species) along the Wirral coastline. As part of this, we are issuing a call for evidence to all anglers who fish in the Wirral area. We have created an anonymous questionnaire to gather information on angling activity and any interactions with Smooth hounds.

NWIFCA is seeking input from local anglers to better understand their experiences and observations related to Smooth hounds. This call for evidence will remain open for two months, from 22/10/25 until 22/12/25.
